The objective of the paper, written by Harry Daniels and Paul Chartrand, is to give a general explanation of issues and concerns surrounding the meaning of the term Metis, to explore the topics of identity, ethnicity and the defining of a Metis people. Emphasized are the need for continuing discussion and the role of the Metis people themselves in establishing an ethnic Metis identity.
